Throwback Academy is a professional, year-round indoor baseball training facility offering private instruction, clinics, and small group training for players of all ages and skill levels. Every player is coached as an individual — because that's the only way development actually works.
Every player is coached as an individual — not as part of a group moving through a generic curriculum. Your needs, your level, your development. That's how real progress happens.
Most programs develop skills. We develop players. That means training the physical tools and building the game understanding to know how and when to apply them in real situations.
Throwback Academy exists because standards matter. Every session, every player, every rep — the expectation is high. That's not a marketing line. It's what Throwback Academy was built on.

"Every player who walks in here is someone's kid. I coach them that way — with high expectations, real accountability, and genuine investment in who they're becoming."
"Andy has the baseball knowledge and technical skills one expects to find in a coach, but it is what Andy offers beyond this that makes him great."
"Working with Andy has made a huge difference in my development not only as a catcher, but as a player as a whole. Every session I've had with him over the past 5-6 years has been amazing, he pushes me and makes me think about baseball and the fundamentals of catching/hitting differently. He breaks down and changes his verbiage if what he says doesn't fully click. He gives me specific feedback, understanding that there is no one size fits all for baseball as a whole. I've gained so much confidence behind the plate because of the time and effort he puts into each session."
I grew up in a small community outside Madison where baseball was more than a sport — it was the identity of the place. I played for legendary coach Jerry Barsness, who instilled standards, discipline, and attention to detail — values that shaped everything about how I coach today. I played through college, started coaching before I graduated, and have spent over 25 years developing players and building programs at every level of the game.
Throwback Academy is everything I've learned, built into one place — a professional training facility where the standard is real, the instruction is individual, and the development goes beyond the field.
Players come in with different skills, different athleticism, different maturity, and different ways of processing information. They can't all do the same things at the same time. I coach each player individually — meeting them where they are and pushing them toward where they can go.
Every session starts with a conversation. What do you want to work on? What are you doing well? What are you struggling with? That's not small talk — it tells me how to coach you that day. I come in with a plan, but the player in front of me is always more important than the plan I brought.
I see too many gifted athletes who can perform a skill but don't know how to apply it in a real situation. We train both here — the physical tools and the baseball IQ to know what to do with them. Understanding the game is teachable, and it's part of what we build.
The work ethic, accountability, and character players build at Throwback Academy follows them off the field — into the classroom, into relationships, into life. I've seen it happen. That's the actual result of doing this work the right way.
"My boys are very different athletes with different strengths, weaknesses, personalities, and learning styles. Andy recognized this and coached each of them accordingly, while never lowering his expectations. He found ways to challenge each player individually while holding everyone accountable to the same high standards... It was very apparent over the years that Andy cares about the athletes he coaches - and not just as players."
Every service at Throwback Academy is built around individual development — not a one-size-fits-all curriculum. Choose the format that fits your player, your schedule, and your goals.
The highest level of individual attention available. Sessions are built around your player's specific needs, current ability, and goals. Andy evaluates, adapts, and coaches in real time.

Structured clinic sessions built around a theme or skill focus. Players receive group instruction and individual coaching within the session. Best for players looking for consistent development at an accessible price point.
Small group sessions for advanced and serious players. More individual attention than a clinic, with the energy and competition of a group environment. Players are pushed and developed at a high level.
All participants must have a signed waiver on file before their first session. The waiver covers participation acknowledgment, assumption of risk, and release of liability.

"Coach Cowley is the best coach my son had in any youth or high school sport. Andy is great one on one as well as leading a team. He teaches players how to improve their game while impressing upon them how to be good people. My player made it to the high school baseball state tournament and we know part of that success is due to Coach Cowley's influence over the past five years."
